Morning visits, lunch in the old town
Guimarães is the most complete medieval city centre in Portugal and one of the country’s emotional capitals — the kingdom was founded here in 1139 and the locals do not let you forget it. A famous wall on the way into the old town reads 'Aqui Nasceu Portugal' (Portugal was born here). For most guests this means a half-day or full-day visit from Porto, sometimes combined with Braga. The historic centre is compact, almost entirely pedestrian, and entirely walkable in a single afternoon.
What to see
Most visits start at the castle and Paço dos Duques de Bragança at the top of the old town, then walk down through Largo da Oliveira and Praça de Santiago — two of the most photographed medieval squares in northern Portugal. Lunch in the old town is recommended; restaurants are excellent and reservations are usually easy.
How most people do it
A half-day visit (around four hours) covers the highlights comfortably. If you want to slow down or pair it with Braga in the same day, plan for a full day from Porto with one driver throughout.
The drive is fifty minutes each way on a clean motorway, which makes Guimarães one of the most predictable day trips out of Porto.
