Aveiro + Costa Nova in a single afternoon

  • Best season

Year-round; coastal light at its best in spring

Aveiro is often described, lazily, as the 'Venice of Portugal'. It is nothing of the sort — but it is genuinely charming. The canals are short, the boats (moliceiros) are brightly painted, and the Art Nouveau buildings along the centre are some of the best preserved in the country. Most guests pair Aveiro with the striped fishermen's houses of Costa Nova ten minutes away — one of the most photographed places in Portugal. From Porto the drive is comfortable: about an hour each way on the A1 motorway.

Aveiro in a day

The old town is small and walkable. Start with the canal-front, take a short ride on a moliceiro boat (it costs almost nothing and is a good photo), then head to the train station to see the famous azulejo tile panels. Lunch is excellent — fresh seafood is the obvious choice.

Once you have done the centre, drive ten minutes west to Costa Nova: the striped houses are real, lived-in, and best photographed in late afternoon light.

A note on ovos moles

Aveiro is the home of ovos moles, a soft egg-yolk and sugar pastry served in delicate wafer shells shaped like fish and shells. They are sold in almost every café in the old town. Try them with a strong coffee; they are denser than they look.
