Recommended stay
Full day or overnight
The Douro Valley feels like a different country the moment you leave Porto. Drystone walls climb the hillsides, the river bends gently between schist mountains, and small quintas open their cellars to anyone curious enough to ask. The wine — Port, table reds, and increasingly remarkable whites — is the obvious draw, but the slow rhythm of the place is what makes most guests stay longer than they planned. We usually drive you in via the south bank for the first views, stop for lunch at a producer's terrace, and bring you home along the north side at golden hour. No two days are the same, and that is the point.
Things to do
Start with a cellar visit at one of the historic quintas around Pinhão — Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta Nova or Quinta do Crasto are reliable favourites. Lunch is best taken at a producer with a river-facing terrace; expect three courses, a flight of three or four wines, and a long unhurried table.
In the afternoon, a short Douro river cruise from Pinhão (one or two hours) gives you the angle on the terraces you simply cannot get from the road. We finish most days at a mirador like São Leonardo da Galafura for the sunset.
When to visit
May and June give you green hillsides and easy temperatures. September is harvest (vindima) — the most photogenic and emotionally charged time of year, but also the busiest, so book early. October light is gold for photography. Winter is quiet and intimate; many smaller quintas close, but the larger producers stay open and prices drop.
Getting there
From Porto, count on 1h15–1h30 by road via the A4 / IP4. We avoid the highway after Amarante and drop down through Sabrosa or Mesão Frio so the first view of the river is the one you will remember. From Lisbon, the easier route is to take a fast train to Régua and have us pick you up there.

Frequently asked
How long is the drive from Porto to the Douro Valley?+
About 1h30 by road. We use back roads from Amarante so the first view of the river is the one you will remember. From Porto Airport (OPO) plan on 1h45.
Can we do the Douro in a single day from Porto?+
Yes — full-day tours from Porto are our most popular Douro format. Expect ~9 hours total including two cellar visits, a long lunch and a river cruise option. If you can spare a night, an overnight at a quinta is materially better.
When is the best time of year to visit?+
May–June give you green hillsides and easy temperatures. September is harvest season — the most photogenic and emotionally charged time of year, but also the busiest, so book early. October light is gold for photography. Winter is quiet and intimate.
Do you book the cellar visits and lunch for us?+
Yes, on our private tour format. We pre-book the cellar slots and the lunch table based on your preferences (Port-focused, table wines, modern Portuguese cooking, etc.). Just tell us in advance which producers you want to see, if any.
Is the Douro river cruise worth it?+
Yes — a one- or two-hour cruise from Pinhão gives you the angle on the terraces you simply cannot get from the road. Reservations are sometimes possible on the day; in high season we book ahead.
Is the price fixed for the Porto → Douro transfer?+
For the direct transfer and the standard full-day tour: yes — fixed price you see before booking. For multi-day or tailor-made itineraries we quote upfront (a short message gets you an all-inclusive number within hours).
Can you pick us up from Lisbon?+
Yes. Lisbon to Douro is roughly 3h45 by road. Many guests prefer the fast train to Régua and pickup there; we run both options regularly. Request a quote with your preferred format and we will reply with the most comfortable plan.
